A man in his 60s has died after getting into difficulty swimming off in the Co Waterford coast.

The incident happened at Boatstrand at around 9am on Thursday.

Emergency services were alerted to reports that a man was in difficulty in the sea.

A multi-agency response got underway which included the Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 117, Tramore RNLI lifeboat and multiple shore units.

The man’s body was recovered at 11am and taken ashore.

A post mortem is due to be carried out in the coming days in University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
