A man has been left with serious injuries following an alleged assault in Sligo town in the early hours of Monday.

The incident happened at approximately 5:35am.

A man in his 30s was conveyed to Sligo University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His condition is believed to be stable.

The scene was preserved for technical examination.

A man aged in his 30s was arrested in connection with the incident and detained pursuant to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in the Co. Sligo area.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
