A man arrested by gardaí investigating the death of a pensioner after an assault in Limerick has been charged.

The man, in his 40s, will appear before a special sitting of Limerick District Court on Saturday night.

The victim, in his 70s, died hours after the incident, which happened at Watergate, on Thursday at about 11.30pm.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick and was pronounced dead on Friday.
