Gardaí have arrested a man in his 40s as part of their investigations into the death of a pensioner in Limerick city.

The deceased, aged in his 70s, was found with serious injuries in the Watergate area of the city at around 11.30pm on Thursday, July 10th.

The man sustained a critical head injury during an altercation outside an apartment, Gardaí believe.

The scene has been preserved for technical and forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

Two HSE ambulances attended the scene and paramedics resuscitated the injured man to the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, on Friday, July 11th.

The Office of the State Pathologist and the local Coroner have been notified. A post-mortem examination has also been arranged, a garda statement said.

A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation.

The man who was arrested is being detained at a garda station in Limerick city under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward. Anyone who was in the Watergate area of Limerick city on Thursday, July 10th, between 11.15pm and 12am who may have information about the incident has been asked to contact investigating gardaí.

Road users with camera footage, including dashcam, who were travelling in the area at the time, have also been asked to make their footage available.
