A technical examination will be carried out on Tuesday on a house in Glounthaune in Co Cork in which the bodies of a man and a woman in their 80s were found yesterday.

The bodies of the pensioners were located close to the stairs of the property on Monday evening shortly after 5 pm.

It is understood that relatives of the deceased contacted gardaí when they made the discovery at the residence, which is situated to the east of Cork city.

Efforts are being made to determine what caused the deaths of the couple. However, foul play is not suspected.

The local Coroner has been notified and the bodies of the man and the woman have been taken to the morgue at Cork University Hospital for postmortem examinations.

The results of the postmortem examinations will determine the course of the Garda investigation. The elderly man is understood to have been 83 whilst the woman was 80.

The Garda Press Office has confirmed that gardai in Mayfield in the city were alerted to an incident on Monday evening at a residence in Glounthaune.

“Gardai attended the scene and two bodies were located in the house (one man and one woman) aged in their eighties, both deceased.

"The scene is preserved for technical examination. No further information is available at this time.”
