A man has been arrested following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Co Dublin.

The collision took place in Railway Street, Balbriggan, after 9pm on Monday.

Gardaí said a male pedestrian (30s) was struck by a car that failed to remain at the scene.

The man received emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Video footage of the victim at the scene has been published on social media, resulting in an appeal by the Garda to members of the public to refrain from sharing the images.

The arrested man (40s) is being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at a Garda station in north Dublin. He can be questioned for up to 24 hours without charge.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone with footage of the incident, to come forward.

Detectives are keen to track movements of a black saloon car in the area at the time. It was abandoned after a collision with another vehicle on Drogheda Street shortly after the man was killed.
