Ireland is set for a heatwave this week as temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-20s.

A week of heavy rain in most parts this week is largely due to die out on Sunday.

Met Éireann has said Wednesday will be a "fine summers day" with plenty of sunshine.

It will be dry, and though some northern coastal areas may be dull for a time, the highest temperatures will range from 17 to 21 degrees in light variable winds.

Thursday is set to be warmer with a mix of cloud and spells of sunshine.

A few showers may develop in places later in the day and overnight. Highest temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees in moderate, occasionally fresh, south to southeast winds.

Friday will be warm and humid with light winds and sunny spells, and with the odd isolated shower possible in places. There will be highs of 18 to 23 degrees.

Speaking to Newstalk, Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel said: "We will see higher pressure building in from the south west initially, and then this high pressure is expected to sit just a little bit to the east of us as we go through the week.

"For the majority of the country it's a drier, brighter week in store with some good sunshine developing.

"And in that sun, with the winds coming from the south, the south easterly direction, it will start to feel much warmer as well, potentially even some hot weather by Thursday."

Before this though, Monday will see scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will moving southeastwards across the country, weakening as it does.

There will be mist too with lowest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

On Tuesday morning, there will be patchy rain, drizzle, and mist gradually clearing southeastwards.

It will then brighten up from the west with sunny spells developing and just a few coastal showers. Maximum temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees in mostly moderate westerly winds.

On Tuesday night, it will be mainly dry with clear skies and a few patches of mist or fog. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees with winds decreasing light mainly west to southwest or variable.
