Gardaí have said a potentially explosive device used in military operations has been recovered in Carlow.

The army bomb disposal team was called to a home in Hacketstown at 10 pm on Tuesday night, resulting in the area being cordoned off and homes evacuated.

The device was not viable and was safely removed.

It followed an appeal around the ordnance, which is used to light up an area during night-time operations, after it went missing after being spotted on a walking trail at Lugnaquilla in Wicklow.
