A young man has died after a three-car crash in Co Galway.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the collision on the R336 near Bearna at about 11.25pm on Sunday.

The driver of one of the cars, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed from the scene to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway, where a postmortem is due to take place.

There were no other injuries reported.

The road between Bearna (Barna) and Na Forbacha (Furbo) remained closed on Monday morning. Local diversions are in place and motorists are encouraged to take the N59 route.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.
