A Galway coffee shop has been included in a list of the 100 best coffee shops in the world.

Coffeewerk + Press on Quay St in Galway city centre came in at no. 39 on the list. It is the only coffee shop in Ireland to place.

The list was published by The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops in the first iteration of the list.

In a post on Instagram celebrating the award, the business said: "We are incredibly honoured to be part of The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops".

"This is all thanks to our exceptional team both past and present whose dedication and passion make it possible".

In another post, Coffeewerk + Press said they are "so proud to be recognised for the Coffeewerk + Press experience" that they offer the community.

"To be part of the first edition as the only cafe from Ireland is a real testament to all our wonderful staff both past and present who are the heartbeat of what we do everyday".

"As I reflect over the past ten years I am truly grateful for all the special moments we get to experience because of our little home in this small vibrant city," the post read.

Submissions were able to be made by hopefuls themselves or by a nomination system, and then an expert judging panel, alongside a public vote worth 30 per cent of the score, decided who made the final list.

The judging criteria included quality of coffee, barista expertise, customer service, innovation, ambience and atmosphere, sustainability practices, and the quality of pastries and coffee alongside consistency.

Coffeewerk + Press was previously listed in the top 30 cafés in the world by the Financial Times.

Other coffee shops on the list include those in Malaysia, Japan, Romania, the United Kingdom and more.

Toby's Estate Coffee Roasters in Australia took the top spot, while Onyx Coffee Lab in Arkansas and Gota Coffee Experts in Austria were in second and third place, respectively.
