Tributes are being paid to a pedestrian who was killed in a collision in Co Limerick on Sunday evening.

An elderly pedestrian was killed in a fatal collision shortly before 9pm on Sunday night. The Garda Press Office said the crash involved a car and a pedestrian and occurred on New Street in the town.

The man has been named locally as Johnny Reidy (74) who was a native of Abbeyfeale town. It is believed that Mr Reidy was on his way home and was close to his home when the collision occurred.

Paying tribute, family friend and Kerry Independent TD Michael Healy Rae said: ‘’Deepest sympathy to all the Reidy family and extended families. I am very sorry for your great loss at this sad time. May the late Johnny rest in peace."

Local Fine Gael councillor Liam Galvin said: "He was a gentleman, the nicest person you could meet, and liked by all’’.

He added: "He was well-known and well-respected and lived here in the town.”

Mr Reidy is survived by his wife Marie, sons Michael and Eamonn. His remains will respose at Harnett’s Funeral Home, The Square, Abbeyfeale on Wednesday from 6pm until 8pm Requiem Mass on Thursday to The Church of The Assumption, at 11am followed by private cremation.

In a statement gardaí said: “The pedestrian, a male in his 70s, was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later,” Gardaí stated. The scene was preserved for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions were put in place.

“A report will be sent to the local coroner and a post-mortem examination will be arranged,” gardaí said.

Gardaí are also appealing for witnesses to this incident, including motorists with dash-cam footage from the area at the time.
