Gardaí are continuing to question a man following the murder of a woman in Co Cavan.

The woman, named locally as Annie Heyneman and aged in her 50s, was found dead at her home in a rural area near Ballyconnell.

Her body was found late on Saturday night.

Gardaí said that they are investigating a “serious incident which occurred at a domestic residence”.

One man has been arrested while another man was taken to hospital.

Ms Heyneman’s body was taken to Cavan General Hospital for a postmortem examination.

A man, aged in his 60s, was also taken to Cavan General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

His condition was described as serious but stable.

The scene was examined by the Garda Technical Bureau.

The man being questioned by gardaí, who is aged in his 30s, was arrested at a separate location and is being detained at a Cavan Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The investigation is being led from an incident room at Cavan Garda Station.

A senior investigating officer and family liaison officer are to be appointed.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses and those with information to come forward.

Anyone who travelled in the area of Kilnavert, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday is asked to provide gardaí with any available camera footage, including dashcam recordings.
