A woman has been airlifted to hospital and is in a critical condition after a crash in Co Cavan on Wednesday.

The two-car crash took place at around 1.10pm in Lisgrey, Virginia.

A passenger in one car, a woman aged in her 70s, was brought by air ambulance to the Mater Hospital in Dublin, where she is in a critical condition.

An occupant in the second car was brought to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the road will remain closed in the coming hours.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or anyone with footage to come forward.
