A man has been charged in connection with the serious assault of two off-duty gardaí in Dublin.

The man, aged in his 30s, is due in court on Tuesday morning following the attack over the weekend.

The two off-duty officers had been on a night out in the city when they were assaulted in an unprovoked attack.

The assault happened at the junction of Dame Street and Eustace Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

One of the officers was later discharged from hospital. However, his colleague remains in critical condition in Beaumont Hospital.

It is understood they are both members of the Armed Support Unit.

Two men in their 30s were arrested following the attack.

One has now been charged and is due in Dublin District Court on Tuesday morning while the second remains in custody.
