A man is in hospital with serious head injuries following an assault in Co Down.

The victim was discovered unconscious in the Monaghan Street area of Newry in the early hours of Sunday.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The man, aged in his 20s, was transported to hospital where he is being treated for serious head and facial injuries.

“Inquiries are continuing today and we want to hear from anyone who was in the area and noticed three men.

“One of whom is described as wearing dark trousers, a dark T-shirt and a dark zip-up hoodie which is light-coloured inside.

“The men are understood to have made off on foot in the direction of the bus depot.”
