A woman (50s) who was receiving medical treatment in Portiuncula University Hospital passed away from her injuries on Thursday after she was seriously assaulted on Monday.

Gardaí attended a home in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, on Monday at around 7pm, where they found a woman who had been seriously injured.

A male (50s) appeared before Ballinasloe District Court yesterday and investigations are ongoing.

Following the woman's death, the local coroner has been notified and a post mortem examination will take place in due course.

Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information on this incident to come forward.
