Two gardaí have been assaulted while responding to a car crash on Dublin's M50.

It happenedon Thursday and has been labelled a "deeply shocking incident".

It happened on the M50 near Finglas when two gardaí, a man and a woman, responded to a single car crash.

The Garda Representative Association says one of the officers confronted the highly agitated driver, in an effort to stop him running into moving traffic.

He attacked the Garda, who was quickly assisted by the other officer.

The second officer received multiple punches to the head and had part of his personal protective gear ripped from his body.

The GRA says the officers were worried about traffic going by, as well as the physical assault.

It also says the driver made efforts to bite both officers, but was eventually apprehended and taken for hospital treatment

Meanwhile the Garda Press Office says both gardaí received hospital treatment but were discharged and remained on duty.

No arrests have been made and an investigation into "all the circumstances" of the incident is underway.
