A woman aged in her 80s has died in a car crash in Co Laois.

Emergency services responded to the crash on the M7 at Borris-in-Ossory around 4.15pm on Thursday afternoon.

The collision occurred at approximately 4:15pm at Junction 21 of the M7 eastbound and involved two cars.

The driver of one of thee cars, the woman aged in her 80s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Her body has been removed to Portlaoise Mortuary where a post mortem will take place.

The driver of the other car, a woman aged in her 50s, was taken to Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore to be treated for injuries believed to be serious but non-life threatening.

The M7 eastbound was closed to traffic with diversions between Junction 21 and Junction 18.

Garda forensic collision investigators were present at the scene for a technical examination on Thursday evening.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.
