The search is continuing for a woman in her early 30s who also went missing after going for a swim.

Rescue workers searching for two swimmers missing in Co Galway have recovered a body in the water.

The Irish Coast Guard confirmed that a body of a man, believed to be in his 70s, was recovered at 1.30pm on Tuesday.

The man was reported missing after he failed to return from a morning swim at Silverstrand beach, on the outskirts of Galway city.

It later emerged that another swimmer, a woman in her 30s, was also missing from the area.

The search is continuing for the woman, but poor visibility is hampering efforts.

The Coast Guard said its Cleggan Unit is on scene "assessing conditions for a drone search".

Rescuers were not able to task the Coast Guard helicopter because of the dense fog.
