The PSNI have responded to a security alert on a residential street in Derry.

Officers were called to Limewood Street following the incident on Monday night.

It was reported that a device had been thrown through the window of a home occupied by an elderly couple.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area during the operation.

Derry City officers said in a statement: “Police are currently at the scene of a security alert in the Limewood Street area of Derry/Londonderry. Please avoid the area.”

Colum Eastwood, SDLP MP for Foyle, condemned what he described as a “shocking and distressing” incident.

He said: “There’s no excuse for the attack on the home of an elderly couple in Derry this evening.

“The people responsible have caused distress to this family and disruption for the community.”
