One woman died and a man was seriously injured when they were struck by a car in Co Cork.

The two pedestrians were in Main Street in Charleville when the incident happened shortly before 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

They were taken to Cork University Hospital, where the woman, in her 70s, was later pronounced dead.

The man, who is in his 60s, was understood to be in a stable condition in hospital on Sunday morning.

The scene of the crash has been examined by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and the local coroner has been notified.

A post-mortem examination will be arranged.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

They are also seeking mobile phone and dashcam footage from anyone who was in the vicinity of Main Street in Charleville at the time of the incident.
