A man has been charged in connection with the fatal assault of a man in Ballina, Co Mayo.

John Casserly was found inside an apartment on Tone Street shortly after 11.45pm on Wednesday with serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood he was stabbed a number of times.

Two men, one in his late 20s and the other in his early 30s, were arrested in connection with the incident.

Gardaí have announced a man in his 30s has been charged and will appear before Castlebar District Court on Friday afternoon.

The man in his 20s has been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
