Over a third of men say they are struggling with their mental health, according to the findings of a new survey from Movember.

The survey also found that a fifth of younger men say they often feel lonely.

Over half of men surveyed in the West of Ireland feel uncomfortable talking about mental health with their close friends.

Movember country director, Sarah Ouellette, said getting Irish men to open up is hard.

"This is a big epidemic, so 25 per cent of men report feeling lonely often. We also see that there's a huge issue around mental health and physical health being linked together," she explained.

"So, whilst these men are feeling lonely and they know their social and mental health isn't where they'd like it to be, and they do know that needs to be better, they're also not going to the doctor.

"They're not going to see the GP and saying: 'I'm struggling'."
