Mayo fatal assault victim named locally as gardaí release man without charge

A man who was found dead at a residential property in Ballina, Co Mayo, on Wednesday night has been named locally as John Casserly.

Mr Casserly (58) was found inside an apartment on Tone Street shortly after 11.45pm on Wednesday with serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood he was stabbed a number of times.

Two men, one in his late 20s and the other in his early 30s, were arrested in connection with the incident.

The man in his 20s has been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The second man remained in Garda custody on Thursday night.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who may have been on Tone Street in Ballina on Wednesday night to come forward.
