Gardaí are investigating after a man was injured during a suspected petrol bombing of a house in Limerick City overnight.

The wounded man, who was in the house when it was set alight, sustained injuries to his back, as well as cuts and grazes, after he jumped from an upstairs window of the house after it was targeted.

The arson attack occurred at Pike Avenue, Garryowen, shortly before 10pm.

HSE paramedics transferred the injured man via ambulance, from the scene to University Hospital Limerick where he was being treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Gardaí as well as firefighters attached to the Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service also responded to the scene.

Nobody else was reported to have been injured in the incident.

The two-storey property was extensively damaged in the fire.

The property has been cordoned off with a Garda Scenes of Crime cordon tape.

Investigating gardaí remained at the house this morning and were to carry out house to house enquiries in the area as they tried to determine a motive for the attack.

A garda spokesman said gardaí were “investigating a fire which occurred at a residence in Garryowen, at approximately 9.50pm, Sunday”.

“The fire was brought under control by local fire services. A man (30s) was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.”

The spokesman said the scene was “preserved and a technical examination will take place”.
