An Irish man has died in custody in Portugal.

The 29-year-old from Donegal is reported to have been found dead in his cell on Wednesday morning.

It is believed he was arrested in Albufeira following an alleged knife attack on his partner.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
