A man has appeared in court charged with assault outside a cafe in Cork city centre.

Aaron Bohane (24), of St Vincent’s Hostel in Cork city, appeared before Cork District Court charged with assault causing harm to Gavin Sheehan on Oliver Plunkett Street last Friday.

He was also charged with producing an article capable of inflicting serious injury.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given by Garda Joe Crowley. He told Judge Philip O’Leary that he arrested Mr Bohane at 9.40am on Saturday. He said Mr Bohane made no reply when he was subsequently charged with two offences.

Defence barrister Elaine Audley said there was no application for bail. However, Mr Bohane is reserving his position in relation to his bail application.

Free legal aid was granted as Mr Bohane is unemployed. Judge O’Leary remanded Mr Bohane in custody to appear before Cork District Court on Wednesday by video link.

No direct evidence was given in relation to the incident. The alleged assault occurred outside a café on the junction of Oliver Plunkett Street and Grand Parade shortly after 5pm on Friday.

The injured man was transferred to Cork University Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged from hospital.
