A man is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) after he was stabbed a number of times by another man in Limerick city centre.

The injured man was stabbed in his stomach and his chest during during an assault on Newenham Street, around 1.20am, on Sunday, September 1st, it emerged today.

“He was stabbed in the chest and stomach, he required emergency surgery at UHL, he is stable,” said a Garda source.

It appears the knife attack was unprovoked, however gardaí said their investigations were ongoing.

The injured man was with at least one other person when he was assaulted by another male.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer, Henry Street Garda Station, said that the injured man is aged in his late 20s and that he was “stabbed a number of times”.

Sergeant Leetch said that “a large crowd gathered” at the scene. She appealed for “any witnesses to this assault to contact Henry Street gardai on 061-212400”.

A spokeswoman at the Garda Press Office said: “Gardaí are investigating an assault which occurred on Newenham Street, Limerick city on Sunday, 1st September 2024. The incident occurred at approximately 1.20am. A man (20s) was brought to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for injuries believed to be serious but not life-threatening.”

“Gardaí are appealing to anyone with information in relation to this incident or with video footage to contact them,” the spokeswoman said.

Anyone with video footage or information or who witnessed the assault can also contact “the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station” added the spokeswoman.

“Investigations are ongoing.”
