Taoiseach Simon Harris on Monday night discussed the plight of Ukrainian children abducted into Belarus and Russia with the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Ireland and Canada are part of a global coalition for the return of thousands of children to their homes.

In June, at the Peace Summit on Ukraine in Switzerland, the Taoiseach and Ireland joined a group of leaders and countries focused on the urgent need to reunite families and to ensure that returned children have the psychological support they need.

Speaking about his conversation, the Taoiseach said: “Thousands of children were taken from their homes in the early months of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

"Ireland and Canada are amongst the countries highlighting and supporting the reunification of these children.

"I will shortly meet with charities and international bodies working directly on this issue and I welcomed the chance to discuss priorities and progress with Prime Minister Trudeau.”

It comes as the Taoiseach met with the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Luc Frieden on Monday where they spoke about the defense of international law & human rights.
