A man has been charged with attempted murder following a suspected sword attack in Co Down.

The suspect, aged 33, was arrested following the incident at a property in the Ballaghbeg Park area of Newcastle in the early hours of Sunday.

He has been charged with a number of offences including attempted murder, grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He is expected to appear before Newtownards Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The PSNI previously said a victim at the property was attacked with what was believed to have been a sword.

The victim sustained facial injuries and a severe arm injury.
