A teenage boy is being detained at a Garda station in Cork after he allegedly engaged in threatening and abusive behaviour towards his family during an incident on Monday evening.

Gardaí from Carrigaline attended the scene at an estate in the town at around 7pm on Monday.

It is alleged the boy produced a BB imitation firearm during the incident.

The teenager declined to drop the BB gun and was subsequently arrested.

Nobody was injured during the incident and no shots were fired.

The teenager is being held at Togher Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The boy was examined by a doctor on Monday evening, who directed that questioning should not resume until Tuesday morning.

Gardaí said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
