Dublin local election results mapped: See the party vote share in your area

The first-preference vote count is complete across all Dublin councils, giving an insight into how the parties have performed in the capital.

There are 31 local electoral areas (LEAs) in Co Dublin, spread across four local authorities – Dublin City, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin.

Independent candidates collectively got the highest first-preference vote share in 12 of these LEAs, including five of the seven LEAs that make up South Dublin County Council.

Fine Gael got the top share of first preference votes in 10 LEAs, while Fianna Fáíl got the most first preferences in three areas in the north of the city.

Sinn Féin fielded the most candidates across the Dublin councils and received the highest vote share in three local electoral areas – Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart, Ballymun-Finglas and the South East Inner City.

Labour received the highest vote share in Rush-Lusk and Rathfarnham-Templeogue.

The Green Party got the top first-preference vote share in the South West Inner City.

First-preference votes are important in the proportional representation system used in Irish elections, but the final results will depend on transfers between candidates.

To win a seat in a local authority, candidates have to meet the required quota of votes, calculated by dividing the total valid poll by one more than the number of available seats, and then adding one.

In the likely event that not enough candidates are above this threshold following the first count, hopefuls with the least number of votes are eliminated and their votes are redistributed based on the further preferences on the ballot papers. The same occurs when a candidate is elected with a “surplus” of votes.
