A man arrested by gardaí after a complaint was made by a female politician from the west of the country has been charged.

Gardaí in the north-west arrested the man, in his 20s, on Thursday under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, which was amended by Section 23 of the Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023, Stalking.

The man has been detained at a garda station in the north-west area of the country.

On Thursday evening, gardai said the man has been charged in connection with the complaint.

“He remains in custody and is due to appear before Galway District Court tomorrow morning Friday, 7th of June 2024,” the spokesperson added.
