A man remains in custody in relation to an attack on an elderly woman in Louth on Friday.

The pensioner in her 80s - who is understood to have been attacked with a hatchet - is in a serious condition in hospital.

Two other women were also injured during the incident at a home in the Glenwood area of Dundalk shortly before 1pm this afternoon.

A man has been arrested and is being questioned at a Garda station in Louth.
