ESB Networks said its crews are working to restore power to all customers as soon as possible amid damage done by Storm Kathleen.

Twelve thousand homes and businesses are still without electricity this evening after Storm Kathleen made landfall earlier.

Atlantic coastal counties were worst affected - with a nationwide status yellow wind warning expiring at 8pm.

A yellow warning for wind takes effect for Donegal, Mayo and West Galway at 8pm this evening.

Met Éireann forecaster Brandon Creagh said warnings will remain in place for some counties.

Mr Creagh told Newstalk: "We've had gusts of over 100km/h in Cork, 109km/h near Sherkin Island and up to 85 mean wind speed in Roche's Point, with Galway and Mayo getting gusts over 110km/h respectively.

"The ones that are the nearest to coasts get the strongest wind speeds."
