Three people have died following a road traffic collision on the outskirts of Claremorris, Co Mayo.

Emergency services are currently at the scene of the incident.

According to the Western People, the incident occurred on the N17 at Castlegar near Claremorris at around 2pm.

It is understood the victims of the crash are a woman and two children. Their vehicle is believed to have been in collision with a truck.

The bodies retrieved from the crash are being taken to Mayo University Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The road in both directions is currently closed and is expected to remain closed for a number of hours. Local diversions are in place.

This is the third fatal road traffic incident in the Claremorris area since the start of the year.
