A man has been charged as part of an investigation targeting criminal activity in the Galway area during which a firearm was seized.

The suspected rifle was discovered following a search at a residence in Turloughmore on Saturday morning, with a silencer and scope also located at the property.

A man in his 20s arrested following the seizure and was detained under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

He has since been charged and is due to appear before a special sitting of Galway District Court on Saturday evening.

Gardaí said investigations are continuing.
