Two people have been arrested after a firearm and ammunition were seized in Cork on Friday evening.

At approximately 10.30pm, gardaí carried out a search of a vehicle on the Lower Glanmire Road, Mayfield, Cork. In the search, a firearm and rounds of ammunition were seized.

A man in his 20's and a woman in her 30's were arrested in connection with the search and detained at Garda stations in Cork.

The woman was subsequently released without charge pending the preparation of a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The man was detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

He has since been charged and will appear before a sitting of Cork City District Court on Sunday morning.
