Couple found dead from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning named locally

A couple in their 60s who died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a house in Co Longford have been named as Paul and Morag Kavanagh.

Their bodies were discovered at the house which is in Killasonna, a rural townland about 5km outside of Granard on Saturday evening.

The couple have been living in the area for the last 25 years and have two adult children.

Gardaí said there was no criminal investigation being pursued and a file is being prepared for the Coroners Court. Investigations are ongoing.

Local councillor PJ Reilly said it was a tragedy for the family.

He described carbon monoxide as a “silent killer”.

“The community is very shocked by this,” the Fianna Fáil representative told the PA news agency.

“They were a nice quiet couple who have been living in the area a long number of years now and their family has been reared up and gone. It’s very tragic for both of them.

“My thoughts are with the family and their friends and neighbours.”
