A man has died and a woman has been injured in a road traffic collision in Co Mayo.

The two-vehicle crash happened shortly before 8am on Friday on the R331 at Belladaff, Tagheen, near Claremorris.

The man, aged in his 30s, was the driver and sole occupant of one of the cars involved in the collision.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, a woman in her 20s, was taken to Mayo University Hospital for treatment. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The road between Claremorris and Ballinrobe has been closed while a technical examination of the scene takes place, with local diversions in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to contact Claremorris Garda station on 094-937 2080, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666 111, or any Garda station.
