A man has been seriously injured following an assault in Co Cavan overnight.

Gardaí attended the scene of the incident involving a group of people at a premises at Holborn Hill in Belturbet shortly after midnight.

The injured man, aged in his 40s, was taken to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is understood to be serious.

The scene has been preserved to facilitate a forensic examination.

Gardaí confirmed that no arrests have yet been made, but officers are following "definite lines of enquiry".
