Government assured VMware job losses will be limited where possible

VMware has told the Government it will try to avoid cutting over 360 jobs at its operations in Co Cork where possible.

On Tuesday, it was reported the cloud computing firm had proposed 364 redundancies across its operations.

The majority of the company's 1,000 roles are based at its operations in Ballincollig.

As reported by the Irish Examiner, the company, which first came to Ireland in 2005, was recently acquired by US semiconductor firm Broadcom.

The matter was discussed in the Dáil on Tuesday evening, with People Before Profit-Solitarity TD for Cork North-Central Mick Barry describing the potential job losses as a devastating blow for Ballincollig.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said Broadcom has begun a consultation process with staff concerning the proposed redundancies, and the IDA will work with the affected employees.
