A pedestrian aged in his 70s has died after a collision involving a lorry in Co Laois.

The incident happened on Chapel Lane, Mountmellick, shortly before 5pm on Monday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the lorry did not require medical attention, gardaí confirmed.

The road remains closed to facilitate a forensic examination of the scene, with local diversion in place.

Gardaí have asked that any witnesses of the collision, or those with camera (including dashcam) footage, contact Portlaoise Garda station on 057-867 4100.
