Man dies after two lorries collide in Co Monaghan

A man has died following a fatal road traffic collision in Co Monaghan.

The incident occurred when two lorries collided on the R188 near Cootehill shortly before 4pm on Monday.

The driver of one of the lorries was pronounced dead at the scene while the other driver was uninjured.

The R188 between Cootehill and Rockcorry will be closed overnight on Monday and into Tuesday morning as the scene is examined by forensic investigators.

Gardaí remain at the scene on Monday evening and are asking any witnesses, especially those with dashcam footage, of the collision to come forward.

As of Monday evening, there have been 165 road fatalities in the Republic this year – an increase of 39 on the same period in 2022.

The figure for 2023 already surpasses the total number of deaths (155) for the whole of last year.
