A man in his 60s has died after the car he was driving veered off the road and went into a lake in Achill, Co Mayo.

Gardaí said they were currently at the scene of the incident at Inishbiggle Island.

The incident occurred at around 8.30pm on Friday, and no other cars were involved.

The driver of the car was recovered from the vehicle and pronounced dead a short time later.

His body has been taken to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital where a postmortem examination is due to take place.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination by forensic collision investigators.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have information in relation to the collision to contact them.
