Gardaí have charged the man aged in his 30s who was arrested on Wednesday evening, 27th September 2023, following a barricade incident at a premises in Ballina, County Mayo.

Gardaí were called to the scene at Market Square in the town on Wednesday night after receiving reports that a man was brandishing a knife in a threatening manner.

The man remained in the shop for several hours, with members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit closing off the area and surrounding the building.

The incident was brought to an end shortly after 10pm when armed gardaí forced entry to the building and arrested the man.

The man is due to appear before a special sitting of Castlebar District Court on Friday afternoon  at 1.30pm.
