Man (60s) critical in hospital after late-night assault in Westport

A man in his 60s is critically ill in hospital after an assault in Co Mayo.

The incident happened after an altercation at around 1.20am on Saturday in Westport.

A man in his 20s was arrested at the scene on High Street and is being held by gardaí at a garda station in the northwest region.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

Any pedestrians or road users who were in the vicinity of High Street between 1am and 2am on Saturday morning and who may have camera footage are asked to make this available to investigating gardaí.
