A woman in her 60s has died after getting into difficulties while swimming off the Co Wexford coast.

The incident occurred shortly after 8pm on Tuesday at Ballymoney Strand, near Gorey.

The woman was taken from the water within minutes, but was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Her remains have been taken to University Hospital Waterford where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

A file will also be prepared for the coroner.
