Shania Twain: Making new album was ‘painful at times’ but ‘incredibly healing’

Shania Twain said making her seventh album was “very painful at times” but explained that the process was “incredibly healing”.
The Canadian singer-songwriter, 60, released Little Miss Twain on Friday and has shared a lengthy post to Instagram detailing the “emotional journey” behind its creation.
She said: “Little Miss Twain and those formative years of my life were just a distant private memory until recently and now it’s a shared story.”
The chart-topper encouraged her 3.1 million fans to “take a listen and see if it speaks to you”, and added: “I’m full of anxiety and excitement at the response.
“Even if you find one lyric that speaks to you or makes you feel something, I’ll be happy.
“The emotional journey on this album was a true rollercoaster and there were moments where I felt like I was sitting with my younger self while my mother looked over me.
“It was very painful at times, but telling some of these stories out loud was also incredibly healing, and then there was the fun and laughter…
“There are songs here that are also about good vibes, summer days and feeling good!”
“Thank you for going into the next chapter with me – its not easy to evolve as an artist and keep your people with you but you’ve been loyal and supportive through it all,” Twain said.
The star went on to thank the “many incredible musicians” who collaborated with her on the album, which is said to revisit her troubled early life up until she landed her first major record deal.
Little Miss Twain includes tracks with US singers Tanya Tucker and Josh Homme, country-rock duo The War and Treaty, and a song she co-wrote with The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.
Twain added: “It was a privilege to collaborate with you and so many new memories were made while telling this story which I’ll treasure forever.
“This one means so much and now it’s yours. Listen loud, from top to bottom, and come home with me to Northern Ontario, Canada.”
The post also included footage of Twain during “late nights” in the recording studio with collaborators such as musician Justin Tranter, and a video of her playing guitar and singing with Wood.
The singer said that she and the rocker “accidentally” wrote their track together “during drinks with friends”.
Twain added that the album included “collaborating with my son”, referring to Eja D’Angelo – her only child with record producer ex-husband, Robert “Mutt” Lange.

Nicknamed the “Queen of Country Pop”, Twain has had nine UK top 10 singles including You’re Still The One, From This Moment On and Don’t Be Stupid.
The Man! I Feel Like a Woman! singer has also won five Grammy Awards and achieved three number one albums, including 1998’s Come On Over, 2017’s Now, and 2023’s Queen Of Me.
Twain recently opened for pop star Harry Styles during his record-breaking 12-night London residency, as part of his Together, Together tour.
