Northern Irish actor Jamie Dornan has been cast as Aragorn in the upcoming Lord of the Rings film.

Dornan has been cast as Aragorn in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

The film is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Viggo Mortensen played Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy so Dornan will have big boots to fill.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings will be delighted as Ian McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood returns as Frodo and Andy Serkis will play Gollum again.

Meanwhile, Kate Winslet will play Marigol and Leo Woodall has been cast as Halvard.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are all producers for the film. The trio were behind the award-winning Lord of the Rings film trilogy which brought JRR Tolkien's books to life.

Serkies, who starts as Gollum, will also direct.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to hit cinemas in December 2027.
